Separating Spaces

Ever since lofts showed up in our cities nearly two decades ago, the comments regarding their usefulness are many. The opinions, many and varied, pro and con, some driving and disparaging…..The loft was born as a new way of life and to it we will dedicate an entire other chapter, today we are only going to focus on something that the loft brought with it.

Open spaces are the cause or the consequence of lofts, but still willing to live in a single space that will cover all our needs, there are tasks that require a certain intimacy. The search for personal space within a shared space, in the absence of walls, requires creativity.

Imagination is power!! In the absence of bricks, all those methods of separation that we could come up with simply work, and the solutions reach our homes in bubbles.

The folding screen is an Asian legacy, unfairly treated during its years of apparent futility. And there are things that have come to our hands, long before their need for them arose.

But now it’s gaining strength day by day since it allows us to unite or separate spaces depending on the activity they are to achieve. It’s a convenient and light option and it doesn’t have the compromise that a wall has, which will last “forever and ever” in the same place.

Any furniture piece located strategically will perform a dual role. A open bookcase on both ends can separate environments allowing the passage of light and at the same time used to store books, knick knacks, figurines…The back of a closet, if treated like a wall will become the partition wall if we place it in the middle of the room.

Glass screens may have been the latest addition to the world of separation. They are best suited for avant-garde aesthetic spaces. The glasses are transparent, translucent, broken, colored…we can also use them as a base, and place stickers or vinyl on them, thus transforming them into pieces with a large decorative weight in our room.

There are textile and paper decorative panels that rolled up to the ceiling do not take up much space, but when rolled down they act as wall or wallpaper depending on your taste. Their quality could convert them into a highly erotic element. Behind the panel we can guess what is going on…but only guess.

Curtains based on colored beads, plastic sheeting united with rings forming a panel, strips of colored cloth..are quick and economical fixes but are also decorative.

Life is increasingly more community based, more plural and much faster. The world is one big open space right in front of us..but we resist and in a constant struggle between meters and privacy, we drain all our creativity trying to develop really ingenious solutions.

The revelation of trends, generates innovation. Something always happens for a reason.
