Colonial Style

Colonial furniture is the result of an explosive cocktail of two ancient cultures, East and West.

Two styles that merge into one single piece culminating one, in a unique and spectacular way. The sobriety, the innovation in the design, the purity of the lines and the modernity brought by the Western culture, alloyed with the materials, craftsmanship techniques and exotic finishes, proper of the East. A blending of cultures that come to us with exquisite furniture aesthetics.

These were originally conceived as outdoor furniture pieces, being that the materials used appear to be brought directly from nature, bamboo poles, algae, wicker, rope, rattan, raffia, exotic woods…

Present in the terraces and gardens of some homes, for years we thought that these pieces of furniture were only available to privileged few, that had these items in their homes.

But with the passage of time, this style has been gaining adherents everyday, because we are taking about pieces with their own personality, capable of transporting us to faraway mysterious countries, paradises…and they have made their way to the interior of our homes creating an exotic and relaxing style, which is why today they are still considered classical summer season pieces.

Within the colonial style, the design of each environment is based on different natural areas such as the sea, forest, flora, fauna…and if we take a closer look, we will recognize different styles within the same.

Signature brands such as “La Maison Colonial” or “Banak Importa“are perhaps one of the mayor reference points in terms of colonial decoration in Spain. They bring out in the majority of the cases the simplicity of the furniture lines, which enables us to enjoy a great measure of the decorative quality that the braiding of these textures produce or the marked grain of its tropical woods.

Even though the supply is increased day by day, this type of decoration still has some weak points, one of them is the size of their creations. Usually we are talking about large pieces, specially beds, which on occasion and in function with design, add to the measurement of the mattress by 25cm on each side. Sofas of generous dimension as well as large centre tables..the exterior is generally limited, the size of the interior colonial furniture pieces, has still some polishing to do.

We could choose to include in the decor of our home one of these pieces even though another style may prevail, or decorate the room entirely in this style. We should place close attention to the added elements. although we are taking about very special pieces that don’t need much help, it is advisable that the decorative elements keep a direct relation to the style of the room.

In the upholstery pieces, bedspreads or cushions, it is convenient to use fresh and light textiles such as linen or cotton. Use soft colors such as beige, white, grey or yellow, and vegetable and animal prints that will foster the ethnic and natural spirit of the colonial furniture.

For rugs, animal prints bring an exotic and wild touch that further enhances the close relationship that the style keeps with nature. We could conserve the natural color or dye them in the desired color, adapting perfectly to whatever the prevailing style in the home.

Wood carvings, ceramics, ivory figures, masks, and all the trip memorabilia from our travels around the world, will be a perfect compliment to this decoration.

Because colonial furniture in its beginnings was created for the exterior, it is convenient to move these inside, do so in the company of an outdoor part, natural of artificial plants, are essential to completing the styling of an exotic space.
