Attics

When it comes to buying a new home, as with so many other occasions, our hearts take over our heads, and in many instances a certain impulse leads us in the decision of a certain house instead of another, the color of a wall, the design of a staircase, the smell of a kitchen…but certainly there is something that makes you fall in love with a house and this certain something is what causes some homes to be purchased much faster than the rest: The attic.
It is a purgatory (excuse the term), on horse between the public and the private, leisure and work, youth and adult, the high and low..But the reality is that when at last we have in our hands the pleasure of decorating an attic, what happens is that we not only don´t know how to decorate it, we don´t know what to convert it into.

I will start by explaining that an attic is a space that sits at the top part of a home, whose roof is presented with an irregular height, usually from a high to low altitude along the entire space, but on some occasions the top falls to both sides or to the center. The windows can be on the ceiling or on the walls and play an extremely important role in the distribution of the space. Although, the close contact of the space to the outside world, will make the temperature variable, cold in the winter and hot in the summer, so we should make sure we have a heating and air conditioner.

This is an area with great intimacy, isolated from both domestic and external noises. If we think of using this space as a rest area we could create a chill out space, with cushions or low sofas, specially in the area of the collapse of the roof, coffee tables, exotic decor, candles and certain specific aromas can shape an attractive relaxation, reunion or reflection space. Because the space is situated up high we will have the necessary individual or collective privacy whatever is the case.

Traffic jams and lack of time makes us not want to leave the house some days, we could then devote this space to the worship of our body, a small gymnasium in which we can strengthen our muscles and get rid of accumulated stress during the day.
But also in thinking of the worship of our body, we could also give our home a little spa. A space prepared to resist humidity, a whirlpool, sauna and shower, and all those typical bathroom accessories, can convert this space in our own little paradise.

Entertainment needs a space where it can be enjoyed comfortably, to listen to music, read a book, watch a movie or enjoy playing a video game, all this could be a pleasure in the right place. Any of these tasks are in dire need of silence, be it to either be trapped by it, or be engaged in it.

The attic is the perfect space to develop these activities, and decorating it does not require much work, a wall to place the television, shelves to place books, a stand to place the music system of the video console, and most of all a rug, because a multitude of entertainment activities are done on the floor, and we would welcome a warm and cozy surface.

Who has not ever dreamed of a place destined as a work station? A desk, computer, books, time..the attic is the perfect space to create your work area, we will enjoy silence and privacy that will allow us to dedicate ourselves in body and soul to our doings.

If the room has enough space, we can devote it to the kitchen, something that is very common in the movies. In this case, we must ensure that we have sufficient meters to locate the kitchen and the dining area in the same space, circular stairs heading up and down with plates might result tremendously uncomfortable and dangerous.

But if the house is scarce as far as meters is concerned, we should not rule out the possibility of locating one of the bedrooms in this higher area.

The master bedroom could fit perfectly into this space, we would place the bed in the lowest part tatami or Asian inspired beds can be a great style. In the tallest part we would place the closets.

It is also an ideal place of the placement of the children’s room, due to its statue and the multitude of activities that children enjoy on the ground, the lack of room height that can some times be an issue will go completely unnoticed.
